With a storied history dating to the 19th century, Irvine, indeed much of the southern portions of Orange County, came into being as a result of lawsuits over title to Spanish ranchos that had fallen into debt. By the late 1860’s, the land that now encompasses the city of Irvine and beyond ended up in the hands of four claimants, among them, James Irvine. In the late 1878, James Irvine bought out the other claimant’s share which spread over 23 miles, all the way up to the Santa Ana river.
James Irvine, Jr. inherited the 10,000 acres after his father’s death in 1886. James Jr. incorporated the land into a corporation that still dominates Orange County to this day, The Irvine Company. Various agricultural enterprises operated on the land and by soon enough became a major producer of crops and citrus.
Over the years, the Irvine family has donated much land to many useful purposes, including the University of California at Irvine. With the establishment of UCI in the early 1960’s, master plans for a new community, to be called Irvine, surrounding the university were proposed. The first developments in this new community were Turtle Rock and University Park. The community grew and new development were built radiating east. In 1971, the residents of the community of Irvine voted to incorporate and the City of Irvine was born. Although the original planned community was for only 50,000 residents, Irvine now has over 250,000 residents and is a major metropolitan area, with the highly rated UCI, diverse population, and home to many national and international corporations. Irvine is the 15 th largest city in California.
As an Orange County criminal defense attorney, William Weinberg’s office is centrally located in Irvine. An arrest in Irvine will usually be prosecuted at the Harbor Justice Center. To the clerks, the bailiffs, and the officers of the court (judges and attorneys), he is a familiar face and he is well-liked by all.
But just because Attorney Weinberg is a nice guy, doesn’t mean he treads lightly when defending his clients.
